School Leader's Collective 2016 | Fostering Creativity in Schools

Warm greetings ! The new year has begun with full gusto and it's the time when The Teacher Foundation (TTF) holds the first of its School Leaders' Collectives! This year we are doing things a little differently. We are organising separate Collectives in Bangalore East, South, Bangalore Central and Bangalore North. This is in order to make it more convenient for you to attend our collective with minimum wastage of precious time spent in commuting across the city.

We are delighted to announce 2016's first School Leaders' Collective for schools in and around Bangalore East. The theme of the collective is Fostering Creativity in Schools - the role of the dramatic arts.

There is a large amount of rhetoric about schools needing to foster life-skills, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication, popularly called the 21st century skills, in their students. And schools attempt to address this additional demand on curricular time by having external specialists and service-providers plug this need as a 'bolt-on'. Unfortunately this only serves as a cosmetic enhancement rather than truly adding value to a child's learning experience. Drama is the one medium that can incorporate all these 21st century skills organically, with demonstrable learning outcomes. Our guest speaker for the day – Jehan Manekshaw makes an emphatic case for authentic ways of integrating drama into the learning fabric of every school and the vital role of the school leader in taking this curricular decision. He will also share the different ways in which schools have successfully incorporated drama into their curriculum.

Jehan has a BA in Theatre Direction from Wesleyan College, USA and a MFA in Theatre Directing from Birbeck College, University of London, UK. He is the founder of the Mumbai-based Theatre Professionals. He has also taught as a guest faculty in Ninasam Theatre Institute, Attakallari Centre for Movement Arts and is a core team member of the Young People's Theatre Programme

We look forward to having you at what promises to be an engrossing and interactive session on 29th January 2016.

Following are the details of the School Leaders' Collective:
    Date & Time: 29th January 2016 at 2.30 pm – 5.00pm
Venue: Ecumenical Christian Centre, Opp. Deens Academy, ECC Road, Whitefield
    Ph : 080-28452270, 28452653, 28453158, 9449821833

Hand outs, tea/coffee and snacks will be provided ! There is no registration fee.
    Do confirm your participation by writing to Nancy/Mahesh at nancy@teacherfoundation.org ; honna.mahesh@teacherfoundation.org or call 95918 24944/ 9591824945

Great to see theatre in/as education highlighted in this article.

The Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam is a rural-based, residential school offering children and young people access to professional theatre training in Tamil Nadu's traditional Kattaikkuttu theatre, in combination with fully-fledged education (Tamil medium + English as Second Language) and comprehesive care. Theatre is an integral part of our curriculum and we consider theatre (a way of) education and a tool of empowerment for the subaltern and the poor.

Because of Kattaikkuttu's low status as a 'folk theatre of the rural poor' all our students come from disadvantaged, disinherited and vulnerable communities only. The work of the KKGurukulam is ground-breaking in the sense that it has opened the stage of Kattaikkuttu training and performances to girls and young women, who now constitute 1/3rd of the student population. It enables children and young people and their parents to take pride in their own culture.

However, defending our choice to offer theatre and education meets often with stiff opposition from the government (which wants to see theatre only as an extr-curricular activity and if used at all, it should be a high class (classical) art form....) and others who see the arts as a 'luxury' for poor kids. Sponsors want us to 'scale up' - something that would violate the one-on-one transmission needed to acquire a complex form of theatre such as Kattaikkuttu and address learning, behaviour and emotional problems that many of our students happen to have.

Theatre uses all the senses. It empowers our kids with important life skills - ability to express oneself in front of a critical audience, working independently as well as working in a team, (artistic) discipline, self-confidence. It stimulates children to think critically. Because of our English through Drama classes all our students are able to express themselves in English. Life-skills which are in high demand within the industry... and are not delivered by regular education.

The Tamil Nadu government recently recognised the Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam under the Private Schools Regulation Act, 1973 - something for which we are very grateful. As part of the recognition we had to sign a bond that we will not apply for any funding from the government.

We would like to hear more stories of schools who use theatre in education | theatre and education as powerful media to transform the lives of children and young people.
